Pathways of Chance is F. David Peat's twentieth book. Over the years he has explored ideas in science, consciousness, society, spirituality and new forms of action in Canada, England and Italy. He has dialogued with everyone from philosophers and Native Americans to artists and composers. Peat obtained his PhD at Liverpool University and carried out research in theoretical physics at Queens University (Canada) and the National Research Council of Canada. He became a close associate of the physicist David Bohm. In addition to scientific research Peat took a deep interest in the approaches of Carl Jung and has given workshops at many Jungian conferences and centers. While in North America, Peat organized a series of circles of Native American Elders and Western Scientists as well as between artists and scientists. Peat is also the author of some twenty books exploring scientific ideas, examining the social implications of science, exploring Jungian ideas and looking at creativity.

In 1996 Peat moved to the medieval hill top village of Pari, near to Siena, where he established the Pari Center for New Learning to run conferences, courses, research projects and host an active program of visitors. The Center's maxim, taken from the writings of Carlo Levi, is "The future has an ancient heart". The Center's main focus is on science, art, community and the sacred.

Author Statement

«Pathways of Chance was a joy to write. It was an opportunity to look back on my life, recall the people I had met and explore the ideas that had intrigued me. The book begins in wartime England, continues with my life as a student in Liverpool at the time of the Beatles, it then moves to Canada, to a meeting with the physicist and philosopher, David Bohm, an encounter with the Blackfoot and other Native Americans, to my ongoing interactions with artists and finally a move to a medieval hilltop village in Italy and the creation of the Pari Center for New Learning.

The book is not only about my personal encounters, it is also an exploration and explanation of the ideas I have spent my life investigating: the mysteries of quantum reality, the paradox of "Schrödinger's Cat", David Bohm's proposal that an activity of information pervades the universe and that mind was present from the beginning. The book discusses how the languages we speak affect what we see and do. It touches on synchronicities (meaningful coincidences) and the ideas of Carl Jung, it looks at the way our understanding of the cosmos may be encoded within our bodies, the relationship between art and science, the possibility of new forms of ethical action and my hopes for the future.»
