Nato a Como nel 1943, abita a Gordola, vicino a Locarno, nel Canton Ticino. Shantena è stato fisico teorico, agricoltore e traduttore. Dal 1994 al 2002 è stato collaboratore scientifico della Fondazione Eranos, un centro di ricerca Oriente-Occidente con sede ad Ascona, Canton Ticino. Dal 2002 è direttore associato del Pari Center for New Learning, un'università alternativa situata nel paese medievale di Pari, in Toscana. Tiene lezioni, corsi e seminari sulla fisica come strumento di meraviglia, sull'uso dell'I Ching, l'antico oracolo cinese, come strumento di introspezione e sulla rilevanza del pensiero taoista per la nostra condizione post-moderna.
